Sending from your own email using Gmail

This is general advice, correct at the time of writing. Gmail may change their system at any time. We take no responsibility for this system working now or anytime into the future!

You can only do this using gmail if you activate the 2-step verification system. You’d be best to learn about this before doing it, but in general it’s a good system.

Once you’ve do that, you can then use this system for sending mail ‘as’ a different email address.

Prep: Get a unique password at https://security.google.com/settings/security/apppasswords you’ll only need this once (Step 6. below) but you’ll want to copy and paste it somewhere.

  1. Gmail settings, Accounts and Import tab.
  2. Add another email address you own
  3. Type name and email address to be added.
  4. For SMTP Server, put smtp.gmail.com
  5. For Username, your full Gmail address including @gmail.com
  6. For password, provide an App Password generated in Google Accounts at https://security.google.com/settings/security/apppasswords as above
  7. Leave Secured connection using TLS selected as is.
  8. Add Account

Test that it works!
